Former Magpies star Chris Waddle is astonished to observe that the ex-Sunderland boss walking from Sheffield Wednesday to take the reins on Tyneside

Steve Bruce was warned that he faces a”huge challenge” when he really does become the guy to triumph Rafa Benitez in Newcastle.

The Magpies are apparently edging ever nearer for a Northumberland native straight back into the north west, with it extensively reported that Bruce has given in his resignation in Hillsborough.

A payment package can also be thought to have been agreed between the Magpies and Owls.

The course seems to be evident for Bruce, who’s worked in the likes of Sunderland and Aston Villa, to go back to some Premier League dugout.

He can, but face a challenging test appeasing a loyal Benitez fan base at St James’ Park, together with former Magpies star Chris Waddle hoping there to be a couple of bumps in the road.

He advised The Mirror:”The Newcastle project is a huge challenge for Steve Bruce.

“Do not get me wrong, Newcastle are a massive club, but he is needing to follow Benitez, who’s been among the most well-known managers they have ever had.

“So he has his work cut out — it is the largest job he has taken on.”

Ex-England global Waddle additional on the decisions made by Newcastle and former Manchester United defender Bruce:”I’d have believed that Old Trafford could have become the job he’s always desired.

“He has managed Sunderland also, needless to say, that the Newcastle fans will select up on really quickly.

“I really don’t think he is scared of a struggle, and he has had some success in some clubs, rather than much success whatsoever.

“I enjoy the bloke. He talks a good deal of awareness and needs his players to work hard. He understands the Geordie people, that will stand him in good stead.

“When he retains Newcastle up, he’ll have done nicely. But he is not daft — whether it is not working out, he will expect a good deal of pressure from the fans and the proprietor.”

Newcastle have found themselves back on the market for a new boss after failing to achieve an arrangement with Benitez about an extension to his contract.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea manager has since signed a lucrative deal with Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang.
