16 Aug Liverpool news:’We must enhance’ – Gomez slams sloppy Reds following Super Cup triumph
The England global believes improvement is essential if the European winners are to match the peaks of last year
Joe Gomez states Liverpool have been”sloppy” in their Super Cup triumph over Chelsea and will have to increase if they are to challenge for the Premier League title again this period.
The Reds were a very long way in the form which saw them romp into the Champions League title last season, a streak that culminated in a 2-0 victory against Tottenham in Madrid in June.
Back in Istanbul on Wednesday, Jurgen Klopp’s team fell behind to a goal from Olivier Giroud throughout the first half but equalised soon after half time through Sadio Mane to ship the game into extra time.
A moment from Mane throughout the excess period appeared to have put the European champions on their way to success but a punishment from Jorginho driven place kicks, together with Liverpool triumphing narrowly 5-4.
And England global Gomez believes advancement is essential if the team are to match the peaks of last year.
“I believe there were lots of things we might have done better on a private note and as a team,” said Gomez.
“There were a few messy moments and we clearly surrendered two goals that might have been averted. As a collective, we didn’t play with the finest football at the first half and I do not believe we have it down correctly.
“You will find stages we know we could’ve done better but in the end we dug deep and attempted to find the outcome. I believe not on that our very best day we could find a result that’s what’s changed and we have so near the Premier League.”
Liverpool visit Southampton that Saturday as they look to increase the victory over newly promoted Norwich by which they began the season last Friday.
The Reds already course winners Manchester City, who thrashed West Ham 5-0 to proceed to the peak of the Premier League table.

Liverpool needs to place their active early season slate supporting them, and Gomez accepts that is a portion of the cost of success.
“It’s persistent but it is a part and parcel to be in the very best,” said Gomez.
“You’ve got to play more matches than anybody else and if you would like to acquire prime place you need to play more matches. We wish to get it done and we wish to work do our best for your team, recuperate, move again.”
