18 Sep Arsenal news: Leno needs inquest and states players were’mad’ following Watford collapse
The Gunners declared a 2-0 lead at Vicarage Road and also the German goalkeeper says lessons must be learnt
Bernd Leno has shown that gamers were going’mad’ from the Arsenal changing room after Sunday’s draw at Watford and admits that an inquest is required to work out why things went so disastrously wrong.
Arsenal appeared to be cruising to the win they had to move up to third in the Premier League on Sunday, heading in at the break with a 2-0 lead thanks to some Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doublesided.
But mistakes from Sokratis and David Luiz gift-wrapped Watford targets in the second half as they fought back to draw 2-2, together with all the hosts wasting several opportunities to go on and secure their first victory of the year.
Overall, Arsenal surrendered 31 shots throughout the 90 moments and Leno – that left a crucial late rescue from Abdoulaye Doucoure to conserve his side a point – admits everything travelled on from the Hornets simply was not good enough and reasons for the capitulation has to be hunted.
“The distances between all pieces of those team were too large so they’d so much distance, particularly in the second half,” said the German keeper. “It had been too simple for them and they can go around our box.
“I really don’t understand why it had been like that but everyone can see that we must chat about it. From the first half of it was better but not ideal. I believe we need to tell the truth and analyse this match. We were fortunate we did not lose.
“Everyone was mad and disappointed later [the game]. Everybody was psychological, really mad and mad. But that’s normal.
“The supervisor is a really positive man. He explained’calm down after which on Tuesday we revisit this match after which on Thursday we’ve got yet another match’.”
When requested about Arsenal letting Watford 31 shots on purpose, Leno added:”I believe lots of [of those] shots were out of space.
“Watford had lots of opportunities but occasionally they had been shooting to get a throw-in and also you can not count every chance.
“[So] 31 is just like every 3 minutes, someone is shooting our objective. It’s a statistic but it’s not’the fact’. By way of instance, Deulofeu, he taken 15 occasions from space.
“Obviously there were a few hazardous shots but not each one.”
Sokratis disclosed he apologised to his team-mates at the changing room right after the match because of his mistake which enabled tom Cleverley to make it 2-1 early in the second half.
The Greek centre-back accepted complete responsibility for Arsenal’s meltdown, stating it would not have occurred if he had not made that error.

It arrived as soon as the people were attempting to play-out out of a goal-kick, something they’d fought with during the competition, together with Sokratis’ planned pass for Matteo Guendouzi being redirected to the path of Cleverley within the 18-yard box.
“It remains a process we must operate on,” approved Leno. “We strive to take the risk because if we overcome the media of Watford, then there’s a good deal of room for our strikers.
“From the first halfwe did it quite well but in the moment we did not create too many opportunities from playing out of the trunk.”
